The Wortham Theatre Center | Houston, Texas
Client: City of Houston Convention & Entertainment Facilities (now Houston First Corporation)
Morris, a Huitt-Zollars company, provided architectural design services beginning in 1983 for this $70 million, 450,000-SF performing arts complex, which contains a 2,200-seat theatre for the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet, and a 1,100-seat theatre for use by repertory and touring companies. The Brown Theatre and Cullen Theatre stages are on the same level. The Grand Foyer serves as the lobby for both houses. Other major interior spaces include a Box Salon, Green Room, five stage-size rehearsal halls, and the Houston Grand Opera's management offices. Morris has continued to provide improvements including the recent orchestra pit enhancements.
