Huitt-Zollars provided complete mechanical and electrical engineering services for the largest replacement facility in the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This sawtooth-shaped hospital has 1,500,000 SF of floor area spread over six floors and a basement, and includes:

  • 1,147 beds
  • clean rooms
  • 12 operating suites
  • food preparation and service facilities
  • total ancillary and support facilities
  • laundry
  • 43 laboratories
  • supply warehouse
  • research areas and library
  • physical therapy room with therapeutic swimming pool

The new replacement hospital was designed using the VA Building System which utilizes interstitial space for the routing of all supply ductwork, return ductwork, exhaust ductwork, variable air volume boxes, zone reheat coils and associated hot water/heating piping. Heating, cooling and electrical energy, as well as communications and fire protection systems, are all monitored by a centralized 2,500-point direct digital control center.
