Huitt-Zollars is excited to announce the promotion of José Zelaya, RA, AIA, NCARB, to Vice President. In this role, he will focus on leading and directing architecture for the institutional practice and healthcare projects across New Mexico. With over 26 years of experience as an architect and urbanist for architectural and town planning projects, José brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. During his time with the firm, he has demonstrated his passion for intricate design, meaningful public space, and community revitalization through his role as project manager for clients including the City of Artesia, Albuquerque Public Schools, Roswell Independent School District, and the University of New Mexico. José has been the key architect in the design of several significant projects around New Mexico, always bringing a broader mentality, sensitivity and craftsmanship of great design, value, and high performance to our clients.
José has been a guest speaker at planning, historic preservation, and architecture conferences as well as a guest lecturer at colleges and universities. José is a part-time Professor of Architecture and Town Planning at the University of New Mexico, SAAP, and a co-author of The Plazas of New Mexico, Trinity Press 2011, a book that explores the public spaces of New Mexico.
José earned a Master of Architecture and Urban Planning from the National University of Honduras, a Post-graduate degree in Urban Environmental Studies from Rotterdam, and a Master of Architecture from the University of New Mexico. He is a licensed architect in the states of New Mexico and Arizona, is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and is NCARB certified.
