Airman and Family Readiness Center (AFRC)

  • .

The Airman and Family Readiness Center (AFRC) at Cannon Air Force Base is a service organization for all Air Force members and families. Its purpose is to be the focal point for family matters such as support readiness and retention, strengthening base policies and programs, counseling, and education and skills programs, and a 1,000-square-foot loan locker designed to provide the basic essentials for service members and their families.

Huitt-Zollars provided full design services for all design disciplines on the AFRC project. A unique aspect of the project was the Air Force requirement of LEED Silver plus additional criteria of 20 points earned in the energy and water conservation categories.

To achieve this level of energy savings a ground source heat pump system was designed, which included a test well program to verify the in-ground thermal conductivity. The site design also has bio-retention ponds to treat the stormwater prior to run off or infiltration.

The project achieved LEED Gold Certification in 2016.
