North Operations Battery Electric (BEB) Yard: National Recognition Award - American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Engineering Excellence Awards Nationals (2022)

North Operations Battery Electric (BEB) Yard

As part of their Zero Emission Electric Bus Initiative, CapMetro partnered with Huitt-Zollars to design the infrastructure needed to introduce and house the Agency’s new and growing fleet of electric buses. The new North Operations battery electric bus (BEB) yard is able to support charging capacity for nearly 200 electric buses. The bus yard layout and underground conduit were designed for maximum flexibility and are able to accommodate any bus/charger configuration that CMTA chooses to test or implement.

The Settlement

Huitt-Zollars provided the civil engineering for the design for The Settlement, a 396-unit, multi-family community on around 20 acres in Kyle, Texas. Our scope of work included research of the entitlements for this site; preparation of a grading plan, parking and striping plan, water and wastewater utility plan; design of the drainage system and a detention pond, and preparation and processing of the construction applications through the City of Kyle. We also prepared a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan in accordance with TCEQ requirements.

Yager Lane and IH 35

Huitt-Zollars provided PS&E for Yager Lane/IH 35 in Austin, Travis County. The project involved replacing the existing Yager Lane Bridge over IH 35, adding two turnaround bridges, and redesigning the interchange at Yager Lane to a conventional diamond with elevated frontage roads. Huitt-Zollars determined the horizontal and vertical alignments and geometries, retaining wall alignments, intersection layouts and grading plans, master grading plans, design cross-sections, both roadway details and cost estimates.

SH 130 Program Management

Huitt-Zollars provided program and construction management services for the project, the first Design/Build transportation project for TxDOT. The project involved developing 49 miles of new location toll road between Georgetown and Seguin, Texas. Program management responsibilities included finalizing preliminary design, assisting with contractor qualifications evaluation, and developing project controls for the program.

Lakewood Drive Roadway and Bridge

Huitt-Zollars, as the bridge consultant, provided engineering design for the preparation of construction plans, specifications, and estimates for a new bridge and approaches located over Little Bear Creek. The new, higher approach on the north end of the bridge ties into the FM 1626 roadway widening project located at the intersection of Lakewood Drive. This intersection is within 150 feet of the end of the Lakewood Drive Bridge. Huitt-Zollars’ tasks included the creation of a bridge layout and design of all superstructure and substructure elements and foundations.
