Broomfield Public Works Service Center Expansion

Huitt-Zollars was retained to perform Civil Engineering services by Stantec for the new Broomfield Maintenance Facility in Broomfield, Colorado. The brand-new, 4-building facility sits on 16 acres and provides service and maintenance for all city and county vehicles including city-owned construction vehicles. This facility consolidates the Public Works Department to a single location for Administration, Maintenance Center, and equipment laydown areas.

Wadsworth Parking Structure

Huitt-Zollars was responsible for preparing conceptual and preliminary design drawings for two parking structures to serve RTD’s West Corridor Light Rail Line, currently under construction. The work elements included site planning, roadway, utility, and drainage design, building architecture and structure design, landscaping and urban design, public involvement and agency coordination. The Wadsworth structure is a 1,000-space garage.

Plum Creek Parkway Bridge Widening

Huitt-Zollars developed design and construction contract and right-of-way acquisition documents for the widening of a three-span, precast concrete twin tee girder structure over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), including widening of approximately 1,500 linear feet of approach roadway. The work involved public involvement, structure design, concrete pavement, curb and gutter, concrete sidewalk, storm sewer, utility improvements, construction phasing, construction and permanent signing and striping, landscape concept development, and environmental clearances.

University and Josephine Reconstruction

Huitt-Zollars prepared construction contract documents for the reconstruction of University and Josephine between Cherry Creek North Drive and 6th Ave. This Better Denver Bond Project included replacement of the deteriorated pavement with new concrete pavement (expected life span of 30 years), construction of new ADA compliant pedestrian facilities; and new traffic signals at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Avenues. The project was constructed in conjunction with storm drainage improvements designed to reduce the frequency and impacts from localized flooding in the Cherry Creek area.

Long Road Improvements

Long Road reconstruction improvements included approximately 4,950 LF of an existing two-lane residential collector street; the project included Long Lane and Jackson Street. The project scope incorporated the evaluation and optimization of elements in order to maximize pedestrian uses, surface and subsurface drainage system, resolution of ADA issues, pavement section, alignment, and streetscape.

Tower Road Widening

As a keynote project in the City’s capital improvement program, the Tower Road Widening project will improve Tower Road from the eastbound ramp intersection (south side) of the Peña Blvd and Tower Rd interchange to 103rd Ave. The project will widen the existing two-lane facility to four lanes divided with a raised landscaped median.

Thornton Parkway Widening

Huitt-Zollars developed design and construction contract documents to widen approximately two miles of Thornton Parkway from the existing two lanes to a five-lane arterial. The project included preparation of construction contract and right-of-way acquisition documents and incorporated pavement rehabilitation/replacement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, retaining walls, storm sewer, utility improvements to relocate two water lines, two signalized intersections, and public involvement.

Front Street Reconstruction

Huitt-Zollars developed construction plans and right-of-way acquisition documents for the reconstruction and widening of approximately two miles of Front Street in the Town of Castle Rock, from Canyon Drive to South of Founders Parkway. The work involved widening the roadway to four lanes with turning lanes. It also included planning, environmental clearance, CDOT coordination for a proposed bridge across I-25, and stakeholder coordination.

Fort Carson Military Housing

Huitt-Zollars provided land planning and engineering documents for construction of new family housing and associated site improvements. Construction documents for approximately 400 new single-family and multi-family housing units, grading, drainage, erosion control, environmental, and utility improvement plans were included. HEC-RAS modeling was performed on the major drainage way adjacent to the family housing to ensure the development would not have an adverse effect on the channel hydraulics.
