Spur 366 Extension

This project involved the extension of Spur 366 (Woodall Rodgers) from east of IH-35E to west of the Trinity River with a tie into Singleton Boulevard, and a signature bridge at the main channel. West of the Trinity River, the project involves reconstruction of the existing Beckley Avenue/Continental Avenue cloverleaf interchange. Beckley Avenue is raised to the Woodall Rodgers level and converted to a signalized intersection with a western tie into the recent Singleton Boulevard rehabilitation project.

SH190 and President George Bush Turnpike, Segment XXI

Huitt-Zollars designed a PS&E package for two miles of six-lane, major depressed freeway construction. Design included two entrance and exit ramps with toll booths, up to eight lanes of continuous frontage roads, relocation of utilities, bridges and walls. The project involved both urban and rural storm drainage systems; four miles of retaining walls including cast-in-place, cantilever, and tied back wall systems; plus major prestressed concrete bridge overpasses at Josey Lane, Scott Mill, and Kelly Boulevard.

SH 183/SH 161 Interchange

Huitt-Zollars provided final design and engineering drawings for three separate direct connectors in the SH-183/SH-161 interchange under the TxDOT Bridge Division Evergreen Contract. The work included completion of bridge layouts, bridge design, quantities, applicable standards, estimate, and the necessary special provisions and specifications. The work was designed in accordance with AASHTO Standard Specifications. The drawings were incorporated into a PS&E design package prepared by the TxDOT Dallas District.

NM 585 Widening

Huitt-Zollars provided planning, environmental, and design services for 2.1 miles of highway from NM 68 to US 64 in Taos. The highway section was experiencing rapid urbanization, and designated as a truck bypass route around the community. A Public Involvement Plan provided community input and addressed accident, speed, congestion and pedestrian concerns. Planning studies evaluated more than ten alternatives to improve and widen the highway; the selected plan provides five traffic roundabouts instead of conventional intersections. The roundabouts accommodate WB 50 truck movements.

IH 410 Freeway Widening

Huitt-Zollars designed a two-mile segment of IH-410 to widen the main lanes from six to ten lanes with retaining walls along the frontage roads, new overpass bridges at Callaghan and Babcock, and the redesign of seven entrance and exit ramps. The design included: roadway plans and profiles, bridge layouts, retaining wall layouts, signing, pavement marking, continuous illumination, and an extensive storm drainage system for the main lanes and frontage roads. The shop drawing review and construction phase support services were also included.

I-405 South Bellevue Widening

Huitt-Zollars completed drainage and landscape designs to widen four miles of interstate freeway in a congested urban area, through this $124 million design-build project. The drainage system included five wetland facilities along with water quality media filtration embankments and a water quality monitoring basin. Improvements included stormwater drainage and control structures, rehabilitation of culverts and pipes, water quality monitoring facilities, slope drainage behind retaining walls, and a new 2.5-acre off-site wetland mitigation site. Roadway restoration plans were prepared.

Big League Dreams Sports Park

Huitt-Zollars prepared the civil, structural and electrical engineering design for the new 40-acre Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City. The Park consists of six scaled-down replicas of famous Major League Baseball fields with dugouts, walls, and stadium lighting. The fields include the old Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Crosley Field, Sportsman’s Field, and Ebbets Field and are designed to accommodate a wide variety of participants from youth to adult athletes.

BRAC Combat Systems Officer Bachelor Housing

NAVFAC, Southeast awarded Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Inc. of San Antonio, Texas, a Design-Build contract in the amount of $22,540,000 for the design and construction of the Combat Systems Officer Bachelor Housing project located at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. Huitt-Zollars provided architectural, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, plumbing engineering design and construction administration services for the 202-unit facility.

Wellton Border Patrol Station

Huitt-Zollars provided full architectural and engineering design from design charrette to final bid documents (including construction drawings, specifications and design analysis). The disciplines included: civil, architecture, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fueling, telecommunications/data, security, and landscaping. The facility was designed to meet LEED Silver certification and the Federal Government mandated energy and water use reduction requirements.
