Civil Engineering

Great Wolf Lodge

Huitt-Zollars provided survey, engineering, and construction administration services for the original and expanded facility, a feasibility study, design of water and sewer lines, storm drainage, and grading plans. Huitt-Zollars conducted meetings with the city staff, franchise utility providers, and the Texas Department of Transportation to determine the steps necessary for design, and handled demolition plans and specifications to clear a 175,513-SF multi-story building. Construction plans included topographic survey, final plat, site dimensional control, a 12-inch off-site water line, on-

Gaylord Texan Resort and Conference Center

Huitt-Zollars handled several phases of civil design and construction administration, for the 60-acre Gaylord Texan Resort & Conference Center. Huitt-Zollars continues to provide services for ongoing expansion, such as the addition of the Glass Cactus, an upscale nightclub and music venue located on the Gaylord grounds. The resort features a 1,511-room hotel; 400,000 SF of meeting, convention, exhibition and pre-function space; two ballrooms at 49,500 and 32,200 SF; 176,400 SF of exhibition space; two executive boardrooms; and more than 61 meeting and breakout rooms.

US 77 Reconstruction Design/Build/Maintain

Huitt-Zollars served as Lead Designer for this $74 million project to upgrade an existing non-controlled access facility to interstate standards and is now designated as IH 69. The eight mile project included adding a four-lane freeway and improving the existing US 77 to serve as continuous frontage roads. It also included adding 14 new bridges, widening existing bridges over existing outfall channels, and construction of over 9,900 LF of retaining walls.

US 191, Segment IV

US 191, between I-10 and Safford, is a typical two-lane rural arterial. Huitt-Zollars was retained to develop construction documents for Segments III and IV for a total of six miles. The existing roadway winds through rolling terrain with very little opportunities for passing slower trucks and RVs. Huitt-Zollars designed horizontal and vertical alignments, drainage structures, erosion control plans, cut and fill plans, and mass haul diagrams.

Tatum Boulevard

Huitt-Zollars was responsible for the relocation and improvement of Tatum Boulevard to a four-lane divided roadway with improved horizontal and vertical geometrics, and intersection improvements.  The project required careful alignment design to minimize adverse impact to adjacent property owners. Drainage analysis was a key element in the initial study, primarily due to a proposed grade separation to accommodate cross traffic.

State Route 87

Huitt-Zollars developed construction documents to reconfigure approximately two miles of SR-87 from a four-lane undivided segment to a four-lane divided highway, the only undivided portion of the 80-mile highway. The project is characterized as a grade, drain and pavement project, requiring the construction of a new divided roadway, extension of existing CMPs and box culverts, pavement preservation, safety and drainage improvements, and native plant salvaging and seeding.

Front Street Reconstruction

Huitt-Zollars developed construction plans and right-of-way acquisition documents for the reconstruction and widening of approximately two miles of Front Street in the Town of Castle Rock, from Canyon Drive to South of Founders Parkway. The work involved widening the roadway to four lanes with turning lanes. It also included planning, environmental clearance, CDOT coordination for a proposed bridge across I-25, and stakeholder coordination.

County Road 104

The construction of a new high school in the area accelerated the need to address roadside safety issues. Huitt-Zollars provided full-time construction engineering and inspection services for a one-mile section of County Road 104 in Williamson County. Project elements included the reconstruction of a two-lane rural roadway into a three-lane roadway, incorporation of one lane of traffic in each direction with shoulders, a continuous left-turn lane, and reconstruction of two bridges spanning a creek.

Yager Lane and IH 35

Huitt-Zollars provided PS&E for Yager Lane/IH 35 in Austin, Travis County. The project involved replacing the existing Yager Lane Bridge over IH 35, adding two turnaround bridges, and redesigning the interchange at Yager Lane to a conventional diamond with elevated frontage roads. Huitt-Zollars determined the horizontal and vertical alignments and geometries, retaining wall alignments, intersection layouts and grading plans, master grading plans, design cross-sections, both roadway details and cost estimates.

Westpark Tollway, Section 11

Huitt-Zollars prepared plans for this urban express toll road in Harris County. The scope of services included surveying, roadway design, bridge layout and design, traffic engineering, traffic control planning, pavement markings, signage, signalization, cost estimating, drainage, utility coordination, and storm water pollution prevention planning.
