Global Reach Drive - El Paso International Airport

Huitt-Zollars designed a six-lane highway to serve as the primary access route for a 573-acre commercial and industrial park at El Paso International Airport. Engineering services included roadway and utility design, erosion control, maintenance roads, security fencing, illumination plan, new traffic signals, landscaping of median, and storm sewer plan and profiles. In addition, six retention basins were designed to hold a 100-year storm, 10-year silt volume, 25% emergency storage with one-foot of freeboard, as per the City of El Paso’s Subdivision Ordinance guidelines.

DFW Baggage Handling System Improvements

Huitt-Zollars provided electrical engineering services for a first generation automated baggage inspection system at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The system provides efficient and effective inspections for explosive devices or weapons, while minimizing human error and the possibilities of injury to security staff. Two automated baggage inspection systems are located in Terminal C.

Dallas Love Field Garage B

Huitt-Zollars designed a new four-story 4,100-vehicle parking garage utilizing a cast-in-place post‑tensioned concrete floor system supported by reinforced concrete columns and straight shaft drilled piers. A safe and efficient pedestrian path from the garage to the terminal lobby is provided by a 1,500-foot pedestrian concourse with moving sidewalks, a 160-foot sky-bridge, and a sky-bridge terminal lobby. The garage employs an aesthetic glass wall adjacent to the terminal. “Smart Garage" technology was incorporated to enhance parking operations.

Atlantic Aviation FBO and Hangar Complex Expansion at Hobby Airport

Huitt-Zollars provided surveying and design services for the Atlantic Aviation Services Complex at the William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas. The scope of work included topographic and boundary surveying; civil engineering design of paving, drainage and utility improvements; landscaping and irrigation; and taxiway and apron pavement condition assessment, and taxiway design.

Dallas Love Field Entrance at Cedar Springs Road

Huitt-Zollars prepared the design to reconstruct and modernize the Cedar Springs Road entrance to Love Field Airport. Beginning at Mockingbird Lane, the project provided for the reconstruction of 4,000 feet of the six-lane divided thoroughfare. The roadway was subject to inundation during storm events and required new storm drain facilities. Additional infrastructure included water and sanitary sewer utilities, traffic signals, landscape architecture and urban design, innovative roadway illumination, and an FBO parking lot.

Dallas Love Field Flood Control Studies

Huitt-Zollars conducted hydrologic and hydraulic studies to develop a comprehensive plan for adequate airport drainage and protection of the new terminal complex. Existing conditions are complex because of on-site and off-site discharges to the airfield and multiple discharge basins. Airfield flooding has occurred at the airport. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was developed and employed to accurately analyze storm events for the watershed. The model simulates real-time drainage system performance during a storm event.

Lockheed Martin Projects

Huitt-Zollars has provided on-call consulting architectural, engineering, and related services for 90 projects at the Lockheed Martin facilities since 1995. Projects have involved improvements to the aircraft assembly and manufacturing lines, energy conservation, laboratories, test facilities, simulators, paint booths, command center, and office facilities modernization.

San Antonio International Airport East Cargo Apron Expansion

Huitt-Zollars conducted planning studies to develop cargo aircraft mix and space requirements. The studies identified short-range and long-term facility requirements for the East Cargo Handling Center.  The plan developed apron and cargo handling requirements through the year 2020. The site evaluation included proposed aircraft parking positions and evaluation of clearances under the FAR Part 77 Transitional Surface. Huitt-Zollars designed the civil airside improvements and prepared civil construction documents for the cargo apron expansion.

Dallas Love Field Modernization Program Landside

Huitt-Zollars served as Lead Civil Engineer for landside improvements included with the program to develop a new 20-gate air carrier terminal for the airport. The project included widening the Cedar Springs Drive entrance roadway, new water and wastewater utilities, reconstruction of the Aviation Place service roadway, surface parking, traffic signals, pedestrian tunnels, landscaping, walls, ADA compliance, signage, and ITS systems. Drainage improvements eliminated roadway inundation problems.

Love Field Automated People Mover

Huitt-Zollars developed the schematic and preliminary design plans for the alignment and stations for the Dallas Love Field Automated People Mover. When completed, this project will link a transportation connection between the existing DART Love Field Station and the Love Field Terminal. Specifically, the proposed system will connect the airport terminal with the regional rail transit network. The firm’s role included the guideway alignment, structures, drainage, utilities, survey, right-of-way acquisition, tunneling, tunnel ventilation, and life safety/fire protection.
